How to Clean Your Shears

Hair sheers are one of the most important tools in your arsenal as a stylist. These are a big investment, since a good pair of shears can cost hundreds of dollars. If you want your shears to last a long time, it is important to properly care for your equipment. Hair care products can get stuck in the screws and dull the blades. This guide shows you how to clean your shears and make sure they last as long as possible.

  1. First: Clean between the blades

Use an old toothbrush to clean around the pivot screw. In order to keep buildup from forming, you should wipe this area thoroughly each day. Remove any hairs that are caught in the screw as well. When you are done scrubbing, rinse the shears with cold water. Then, wipe them off with a soft, dry cloth to prevent rust from forming.

  2. Second: Lubricate the shears

Properly lubricate your shears on a weekly basis. If your equipment gets frequent use, lubricate even more frequently. Use one small drop of oil and place it directly on the pivot point screw. This not only ensures a smooth cut, but prevents rust from forming at the pivot point. There are several great lubricants on the market. The best choices are made from silicone. These do not allow hair to stick as much as oil does. Still, oil lubricants are the standard and are fine in most circumstances. Some shears come with lubricants. If your pair did, use the lubricant provided.
